1917 0.75 oz Egyptian 20 Piastres Silver Coin

During the beginning of World War 1, the Ottoman Empire had allied itself with Germany. To assure the use of the Suez canal as well as other interests, the British formally occupied Egypt and installed a pliant ruler (Sultan Hussein Kamel). Within this time the Ottoman-style coinage ceased and were replaced with "millemes" and "piastres", and for the first time English lettering and numbers appeared on Egyptian coins.

This coin is from the time of British occupation of Egypt. It was considered the 'crown' of Egyptian currency, and could be exchanged with other silver coins in the global market. The obverse displays the name of Sultan Hussein Kamel bounded by a wreat, with the ascension date 1333 (1914 AD) at the base. The reverse has the denomination in both Arabic and English with the year shown in both Hirja and Gregorian dates.

The condition of the coin is as seen in the photos.

Like all of our other silver coins, this one is guaranteed to be 100% authentic. Item will be wrapped and packaged safe for delivery.
