1911-1931-M Australia Gold Sovereign George V Avg Circ

Introduction:

King George V ruled the British Empire from 1911-1931. The sovereign coins minted during his time featured the handsome bust portrait of King George V on the obverse. These coins were not just minted in the British Royal Mint, but they were also minted at the Australian branches of the Royal Mint. In Australia, there were three branches of the Royal Mint; the Sydney Mint, the Melbourne Mint, and the Perth Mint and all three had their own mint marks. Today the sovereign coins are recognized and divided apart using these mint marks. The Australian minted sovereign coins are rarer compared to the Royal Mint issues, hence it would be a smart investment.

Detailed Information:

The coins struck from 1911-1931 come under the ruling period of King George V. During his time, the sovereign coins were not just minted in the British Royal Mint, but its various other branches around the world too. A significant amount of coins were minted in the Australian Branches.

There were three main Royal Mint Branches in Australia, the first one to open was the Sydney Mint in 1871 and stopped minting in 1926. The Melbourne Mint was the second Royal Mint branch to establish in Australia, it was started in 1872 and stopped minting in 1931. The third and the last Royal Mint branch in Australia is the Perth Mint which opened in 1899 and struck coins for Britain till 1931.

Each of these mints has its own mint marks; it is “S” for Sydney Mint, “M” for Melbourne Mint and “P” for Perth Mint.

The sovereign coins for King George V were minted from 1911 only, although he ascended the throne in 1910. These Australian Gold coins from his era are also known as World War I sovereign coins and these were the last sovereigns to ever be in circulation. The Royal Mint in London stopped minting these coins in 1917. However, these coins continued to be minted in the Australian branches till 1931.

The George V sovereigns minted at Melbourne Mint are lesser in quantity than those struck in the London Royal Mint.

This beautiful sovereign coin will make your portfolio very impressive.
