Between 1878 and 1964, the United States government issued Silver Certificates as paper currency. In present times, these certificates are commonly bought and sold as desirable collectors’ items. There are thirteen different varieties of 1899 silver certificates, with 11 signature combinations.
The front of the note carries the signatures of Register of the Treasury Houston Benge Teehee and Treasurer John Burke. Both served under President Woodrow Wilson. A large black eagle, wings spread wide, is prominently featured in the center of the bill above the phrases “ONE SILVER DOLLAR” and “SILVER CERTIFICATE”. The serial number and the US Seal on either side of the eagle are both displayed in blue ink. Underneath the eagle, two small portraits depicting Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses Grant appear. Other Text: “Payable to the Bearer on demand”, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”.
The back of the note showcases a green stylized border surrounding a block of obligation text in the center. The number 1 appears on the left and right side of the center text. The word “ONE” is featured in all four corners. Other Text: “SILVER CERTIFICATE”, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”.
