1888 S $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coin NGC AU Details   

This beautifully designed $5 Gold Liberty Head Half Eagle Coin was designed by Christian Gobrecht, Chief Engraver of the US Mint from 1840 to 1844.

The coin weighs .2419 troy ounces and is struck in 90% fine gold.

The obverse side of the coin, inspired by Benjamin West's painting of Venus in Omnia Vincit Amor, contains Lady Liberty facing to the left, with13 stars encircling her.

The reverse side features a bald eagle, wings spread out with a shield across its chest, carrying an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in each of its talons. Below the eagle is the mint mark "S" for the San Francisco Mint.

Because of its convenient size and denomination, the Liberty Eagle became instantly popular and remains a beloved and rare coin today.
