The intriguing stories that surround the Carson City Silver Morgan Dollars and the fact they are a low mintage series makes collectors and investors throng to purchase these coins. They are a very short series of just 13 coins, which also makes them a highly desirable collectible. Although many dates are readily available, few dates are difficult to get your hands on to even complete the set of 13 coins. The Carson City Morgan Dollars were minted only from 1878 to 1893 unlike the Morgan Dollars from the other mints which were minted from 1878 to 1904 and once again in 1921.

Coin Features:

  • Made from 90% silver with a weight of 0.7734 troy oz
  • Contains a face value of $1
  • Each coin is lodged in an original GSA-issued plastic case with NGC grading mentioned on it
  • Mint issues from Carson City (CC)
  • NGC grading is MS 65
  • Obverse: Left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Liberty Cap with the word “LIBERTY” inscribed on the ribbon. The cap is decorated with two heads of wheat and two cotton blossoms. 13 Stars for the 13 original colonies, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and Year of Mintage 1884 encircle the main device. A design by George T. Morgan.
  • Reverse: Features a George T. Morgan design of a majestic bald eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons to symbolize peace and preparedness. Inscriptions – “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

Although Morgan Dollars were not all that popular when they were first released, it was after the 1960s, that the numismatists started considering their value.

Many surviving Carson City Morgan Dollars were sitting in the treasury for a long time and had escaped the Pittman Act that required the melting of all the silver dollars. In 1930, a few dealers came to know that an uncirculated Carson City Morgan Dollars could be obtained from the Cash Room of the Treasury Department for $5, the market value at the time. Throughout 1940 and 1950, only a few dealers who knew about it availed of it secretly without spreading the news to other dealers. However, in the 1960s with the United States Dollar’s devaluation, many redeemed their silver certificates for silver dollars at the U.S. Treasury.

In 1962, any person with a redeemable silver certificate could receive a rare and valuable Silver Morgan Dollar. This incident resulted in many rushing to the Treasury to purchase this coin with this executive department selling millions of Morgan Dollars and Silver Peace Dollars to the general public.

The Government stopped offering these silver dollars that same year, with about 2.9 million coins remaining in the Treasury vaults. Almost all of these coins turned out to be the coveted Carson City Silver Morgan Dollars. This news leads to great excitement in the numismatic community. Legislation passed on December 31, 1970, authorized the Government Services Administration to market and sell these CC Morgan Dollars through mail bid sale. Between 1972 and 1980 GSA conducted several mail bid sales of the GSA Hoard.

These coins come placed in an original GSA-issued case with NGC or PCGS grading giving this product a higher value as they are authentic products with the grading of their condition. These cases reduce the rough handling of these coins and prevent any kind of wear and tear or damage.
