Detailed Information:

The Carson City Mint brings back to life the Wild West Era of America and how the finding of the Comstock Lode silver vein changed the fortune of Carson City as well as America. Prior to this discovery, Carson City was just a small settlement that survived by providing supplies to those prospectors who were heading west in search of fortune influenced by the California Gold Rush. The discovery of the Comstock Lode in 1858 lead to a huge number of population settling down in Carson City and it soon became a hub, the boom in business led to the fast growth of the city which soon had hotels, restaurants, breweries, saloons, and boarding houses to boast of.

Since it was a difficult and expensive task to carry all the mined silver to the San Francisco Mint and Philadelphia Mint, the government came up with a plan to establish a closer mint that did not cost much for transportation and involved less risk. The legislation was passed in March 1863 to establish a mint in the Nevada Territory and Carson City became the ideal candidate. However, due to civil war and post-war financial problems, the Carson City Mint could only begin functioning in 1870.

The finding of the Comstock Lode silver leads to the Bland-Allison Act which required the Treasury to purchase two to four million dollars’ worth of silver each month to mint coins. This lead to the minting of millions of Morgan Dollars which was more than required for circulation. Hence most of it was stored in the Treasury vault. The 1918 Pittman Act led to the melting of millions of Morgan Dollars that were sitting in the Treasury Vaults, but it was discovered, in the 1960s, that around three million uncirculated Silver Morgan Dollars from the Carson City Mint still existed.

The Morgan Dollar is named after its designer George T. Morgan and is one of the most popular and sought-after coins. It was minted from 1878-1904 and once again in 1921 at five different mints in total. There are different ways and combinations of completing a collection of these coins which may depend on dates, mint marks, condition, and much more.
