1880 CC $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coin NGC Fine Details
This beautifully designed and rare $5 Gold Liberty Head Half Eagle Coin is graded by NGC as Fine Detailed.
These $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagles were designed by Christian Gobrecht, Chief Engraver of the US Mint from 1840 to 1844. This coin is the Variety 2 with the motto above the Eagle, which was minted between 1866-1908. The coin weighs .2419 troy ounces and is struck in 90% fine gold.
The obverse side of coin, inspired by Benjamin West's painting of Venus in Omnia Vincit Amor, contains Lady Liberty facing to the left. The reverse side features a bald eagle, wings outstretched with a shield across its chest, carrying an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in each of its talons. Below the eagle is the mint mark "CC" for Carson City.
