The Morgan Dollar draws its name from its esteemed designer, engraver George T. Morgan. George Morgan opted to model the Lady Liberty bust after an American woman named Anna Willess Williams. This was a somewhat controversial move, as Liberty was previously designed using the traditional neoclassical bust portrait. Minted from 1878 until 1904, the Morgan Dollar mintage came to a halt to the depletion of the US silver reserve. Following the passage of the Pittman Act in 1918, which authorized the melting of millions of Silver Dollars, the US Mint resumed the mintage of Silver Morgan Dollars in 1921. The Morgan Dollar design was soon replaced by the Peace Dollar design later that year, making 1921 the last year Morgan Dollars were produced.
The obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty’s left-facing profile designed by George T. Morgan, along with the year of mintage and the phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM. Thirteen stars representing the original 13 colonies encircle the bottom rim of the coin.
The reverse, also designed by George Morgan, displays the majestic American Eagle with its outstretched wings. The Eagle holds an olive branch and arrows in its talons. A wreath encircles the bottom rim of the coin.
