1874 Belgium 20 Francs Leopold II Gold Coin PCGS MS 64

This Position A beautifully designed 1874 Gold Belgian coin is composed of 0.1867 oz. of .900 pure gold, has a face value of 20 Francs, and is graded by PCGS as a Mint State 64 - average luster and strike, several small contact marks in groups, as well as one or two moderately heavy marks may be present - overall attractive quality, with a pleasing eye appeal.

Leopold II of Belgium reigned from 1865 to 1909, and this type Belgian Gold coins were issued from 1867 to 1882. The obverse features the bearded bare head of King Leopold II facing right, with the inscription "LEOPOLD PREMIER ROI DES BELGES". Under the head are the engraver's initials "L W," and the date (1874). The reverse features the Belgian coat of arms and a lion in a circular shield draped in an ermine cape topped by a crown, with the inscription "L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE 20 FR". The edge of the coin has raised 5-pointed stars with the raised lettering "DIEU PROTEGE LA BELGIQUE". This type of coin has two different possible positions for the edge inscription: Position A, while the obverse side facing downwards, the lettering is upright, and Position B, while the obverse side facing upwards, the lettering is upright.

The obverse of the 20 Francs Belgium gold coins is a reminder of the fantastic reign of Leopold II who was King of Belgium during 1865 through 1909. He is sometimes remembered as the Builder King due to the many buildings commissioned in Brussels, Ostend and Antwerp under his reign. The memory of the King of Belgium Leopold II is vivid because he was the monarch that colonized Congo in 1876 by hiring the famous explorer Henry Morton Stanley to do so. King Leopold II has his portrait on the obverse of the Belgian 20 Francs gold coins facing right, being surrounded by the words "Roi des Belges". Also at the bottom it is written the year "1870".
