1871-1892 Mexico Second Republic 1 Peso Silver Coin Cull (Random Year)

Step into the monetary history of 19th-century Mexico with the 1871-1892 Mexico Second Republic 1 Peso Silver Coin Cull (Random Year). These genuine Mexican circulation coins come from an important period in the development of the country's Republican coinage and offer an affordable way to acquire historic silver. Each piece is sold in Cull condition, making this listing especially suitable for collectors who value age, silver content, and historical character over higher-grade preservation.

Following the collapse of the Second Mexican Empire and restoration of the Republic in 1867, Mexico continued developing its decimal monetary system around pesos and centavos. Silver played a major role in the country's economy, while numerous regional mints participated in producing coinage for domestic commerce and international trade.

One of the best-known designs from the early portion of this period is the Balance Scale Peso, introduced in 1869. Its symbolism reflected the institutions of the Mexican Republic: scales represented the judicial branch, the scroll inscribed LEY represented law and the legislative branch, and a sword represented executive authority. The opposite side carried Mexico's national emblem featuring an eagle and snake.

Balance Scale Pesos were produced at numerous facilities, including Mexico City, Guanajuato, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Durango, Culiacán, Guadalajara, Oaxaca, and Chihuahua. The type was accepted domestically but did not achieve the same success in international trade as Mexico's established Cap-and-Rays 8 Reales. As a result, production of the Balance Scale Peso ended in 1873 and the familiar 8 Reales returned for the export market.

Coin Specifications:

  • Made from .9027 fine silver with a weight of 0.7857 troy oz
  • Minted during the late Second Republic of Mexico.
  • Cull condition
  • Obverse: Features the iconic national arms of Mexico, depicting an eagle with a serpent in its beak, a symbol deeply rooted in Mexican heritage
  • Reverse: Scales of justice with radiant liberty cap at top, and law scroll below crossed by sword. With value, mint, assayer's initial and fineness at bottom.

Cull examples are an excellent way to collect genuine 19th-century Mexican silver at a more approachable price point without paying the premiums associated with better-preserved specimens. For collectors who appreciate authentic circulation history, older world silver, and the opportunity to encounter different dates and mints, these random Second Republic Pesos provide an affordable foundation for building a broader Mexican coin collection.
