Bullion Exchanges proudly presents the 1861 Platinum Confederate Cent 150th Ann. NGC Gem Proof is a remarkable piece commemorating a unique chapter in American history. This extraordinary coin, minted from a quarter ounce of .999 pure platinum, is a meticulous recreation of the Confederate cent designed by Robert Lovett Jr. during the Civil War.
In 1861, as the Civil War began, the Confederate States sought to establish their own currency. Agents of the Confederacy enlisted Philadelphia engraver Robert Lovett Jr. to design a one-cent coin. Lovett struck about a dozen specimens before becoming fearful of the legal repercussions and hid the dies in his cellar, where they remained until 1873. In 2011, to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Smithsonian authorized the striking of this platinum cent using Lovett’s original design.
