The obverse of the coin, designed by Christian Gobrecht, features a leftward facing profile portrait of Lady Liberty with her hair tied in a bun and secured with beaded strings. She is shown wearing a coronet on her head with "LIBERTY" inscribed on it. Lady Liberty is encircled by 13 stars to represent the 13 original colonies of the US. At the bottom is the year of mintage.
The reverse features a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast and holding olive branches and arrows in its talons, which is a design inspired by the Great Seal of the United States. Inscriptions - "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "FIVE D."
