The 1861 issue is especially interesting because two reverse types are recognized, with Type 2 corresponding to the redesigned or “New Reverse.” The Philadelphia Mint produced 1,283,788 Quarter Eagles in 1861 across the issue, and NGC notes that the date is among the relatively few pre-1878 Quarter Eagles encountered in Mint State with some frequency, partly because examples were hoarded when banks and the federal government suspended gold payments during the Civil War.
