Bullion Exchanges is proud to offer the 1857 SS Central America California Gold Rush 1.5 Grams Pinch Gold Dust PCGS Certified and recovered from one of the most legendary shipwrecks in American history. This gold dust, meticulously preserved and authenticated, comes directly from the wreck of the SS Central America, famously known as the "Ship of Gold." Encapsulated by PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) in a protective holder, this historic treasure offers a rare opportunity to own a tangible remnant of the California Gold Rush era.
What Makes This Gold Special?
In August 1857, over $1.6 million in gold—comprising freshly minted coins, ingots, and raw dust—was loaded onto the steamer SS Sonora in San Francisco. This cargo, along with hundreds of passengers, made its way to Panama and was transferred to the SS Central America for its journey to the East Coast. However, disaster struck when a catastrophic hurricane engulfed the vessel. Despite heroic efforts by Captain William Herndon and his crew, the ship sank, taking with it an estimated $2 million in gold, equivalent to more than $300 million today.
Rediscovered in 1988 under the guidance of Chief Scientist Bob Evans, the wreck yielded thousands of rare gold items—among them were these authentic “pinches of gold,” a term used during the 1850s to describe small, weighed quantities of gold used in trade. Each pinch represented roughly 50¢ in value at the time, equivalent to a California fractional gold coin.
