The California Gold Rush movement began with the discovery of gold deposits in Coloma, California in January 1848. Approximately 300,000 travelers journeyed to California in search of wealth and success until 1855, when the gold rush came to an end. In 1857, a ship called SS Central America (also referred to as “Ship of Gold”) unfortunately sank in a fierce hurricane, taking the lives of 425 passengers. The SS Central America also took down 30,000 pounds of gold to the ocean's floor. In 1988, a remotely operated vehicle was sent down to the wreckage, which led to the recovery of large amounts of gold and other precious artifacts. This specific 0.5 gram gold nugget was found among the gold recovered from the sunken steamboat.
