1843 D $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle Coin NGC AU 53

This beautifully designed and very rare 1843 Variety 1 No Motto $5 Half Eagle is composed of .24187 oz. of .900 fine gold, graded by NGC as About Uncirculated 53 - a coin with sharp and full details, and possible light wear at the highest points of the coin.

The half eagle was the first gold coin actually struck for the United States. The $5 Dollar piece was authorized to be coined by the Act of April 2, 1792, and the first type was .9167 fineness. Fineness became .900 by the Act of January 18, 1837. There are many varieties among the early dates, caused by changes in the number of stars and style of eagle, by overdates, by differences in size of figures in the dates.

This Variety 1 No Motto $5 Half Eagle was minted between the years 1839-1866, and is a perfect testament to America's glorious history. Designed by the U.S. Mint chief engraver Christian Gobrecht, the Half Eagles’ obverse was inspired by Benjamin West’s famous painting of Venus, Omnia Vincit Amor (“Love Conquers All”), and it depicts a left-facing bust of Lady Liberty, her loose curls cascading down her neck, and wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY”. 13 stars encircle her, with the date of the coin positioned below her profile. The reverse features the majestic American eagle, holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons with a shield across its breast, with the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” around it, and "Five D." Liberty Head Half Eagles were minted in two variations from 1839 through 1908 in Philadelphia (without a mintmark), San Francisco (“S”), Charlotte, North Carolina (“C”), Dahlonega, Georgia (“D”), Carson City, Nevada (“CC”), New Orleans (“O”), and Denver (“D”).

Like all of our other gold coins, this one is guaranteed to be 100% authentic. Item will be wrapped and packaged safe for delivery.
