106.86 oz US Treasury Silver Grease Bar
This collectible 106.86 oz US Treasury Silver Grease Bar is currently available from Bullion Exchanges! These crudely poured silver bars were manufactured in response to a nationwide push to trade in silver banknotes for actual silver. This rush was due to Congress repealing a clause assuring one dollar's worth of silver for each US dollar bill. The very first grease bars ever produced got their name from their unrefined appearance, as well as their weight marked with grease pencils. These pencil markings were often the only identifying factors that were added onto the bars. Serial numbers and hallmarks were added later. As demand for these bars trended upward and production sped up significantly, the purity of these silver bars started to decline.
The front displays the weight of the bar written with a grease pencil.
The back is left intentionally blank.
