Since its founding in 1817, Johnson Matthey has been a leader in the gold and silver assaying industry. In 1851, George Matthey joined forces with Percival Norton Johnson, and the firm was renamed Johnson & Matthey. One year later, the company was appointed as the official assayer and refiner for the Bank of England. In 2015, Asahi Holdings, Inc., a Japanese firm, acquired Johnson Matthey's gold and silver refining operations. Older Johnson Matthy bullion bars that are considered “vintage” generally feature a stamp showing “SLC” or “Canada”. Newer bars usually feature a “USA” stamp.
The front of these bars contains the Johnson Matthey logo along with weight and purity. Additionally, a small stamp featuring “USA” appears on the lower right.
