These coins are the eleventh release in the 12 Labors of Hercules Series by the Provident Metals. A coin based on each labor was released each month and was made available for only one month after its release. The series ended in September 2015 and is not in production anymore, hence, the availability of these coins are limited.

Each coin features a beautiful rendition of the twelve labors of Hercules on its obverse, while the reverse design stays the same. The eleventh coin in series is based on Hercules’ eleventh task, getting the Apples of Hesperides.

Hercules is one of the greatest Greek heroes, a Demi God, who is popularly known for his great adventures. He happened to slew his wife, son, and daughter, when he was driven mad by Hera, Queen of the Gods. When he came to his senses, he repented and as a penance, he was suggested by Pythia, the Oracle of Delphi to serve King Eurystheus, Hercules’ cousin. Eurystheus assigns twelve tasks for Hercules which he completes in 12 years. The eleventh task is getting the Apples of Hesperides.

The Hesperides in Greek Mythology are Nymphs of Evening and daughters of Atlas who tend to a beautiful garden in the far western corner of the world in which stands the Apple tree that produces golden apples. This apple tree was also guarded by a hundred headed dragon called Ladon. Since Hercules had no idea where this garden was situated, he had to catch hold of the shape shifting sea God Nereus, who told him about the garden’s whereabouts after a great struggle.

On the way to the garden, Hercules had to face several challenges from different mythological characters and at last rescued Prometheus, who gave him the idea of sending Atlas, the Titan of Strength, who is burdened with holding up the sky and earth, but detested doing it. Hercules offers to hold up the sky and earth in return for the golden apples from the garden to which Atlas instantly agrees. Once he gets the apples from the garden, he refuses to take back his burden from Hercules and instead offers that he will deliver the apples to Eurystheus. Hercules very shrewdly fools Atlas into holding up the earth and sky for a moment, and when Atlas does it, runs away with the apples to give it to Eurystheus.

The coin on its obverse features a beautiful image of the three Hesperides maidens guarding the apple tree and only the body of the hundred headed reptile, Ladon winding up the tree can be seen in the image. The reverse features a handsome profile portrait of Hercules wearing the impenetrable skin of the Nemean Lion with its head forming a helmet on the head of Hercules. He is holding a wooden club in his hand on a Greek key border background. This is a stunning coin with a beautifully detailed image and adding copper to an investment portfolio helps in diversifying it better.
