Bullion Exchanges is proud to offer the $1 Gold Indian Princess Head Type 3 - Almost Uncirculated (AU) (Random Year, 1856-1889). This historic gold coin, struck in .900 fine gold, represents the final design in the U.S. $1 Gold series. Designed by James B. Longacre, the Type 3 Gold Dollar features a striking depiction of Lady Liberty in a Native American-inspired headdress, symbolizing the nation’s westward expansion. These Almost Uncirculated (AU) specimens exhibit only minimal wear, retaining much of their original luster, making them a sought-after addition to any numismatic collection.

The Type 3 Gold Dollar was introduced in 1856, replacing the short-lived Type 2 design, which suffered from weak strikes and excessive wear. The new design featured a larger, more refined portrait of Liberty, improving durability and detail. Minted until 1889, this series saw production across multiple U.S. Mint facilities, including Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco. These coins circulated widely during their time but were gradually phased out due to rising gold values and the adoption of larger denomination coins. Today, surviving examples are treasured for their historical significance and classic design.
