$1 Gold Indian Princess Head Type 2 - Extra Fine XF (Random Year, 1854-1856)

Own a historic piece of American coinage with the $1 Gold Indian Princess Head Type 2 – Extra Fine (XF) (Random Year, 1854–1856). Struck from 0.0484 troy oz of .900 fine gold, this classic U.S. gold dollar features the elegant Indian Princess Head design by James B. Longacre. Offered in Extra Fine condition, each coin retains sharp detail and rich character, making it a meaningful addition for collectors of 19th-century gold coins.

Introduced in 1854, the Type 2 Indian Princess Head Gold Dollar replaced the earlier Liberty Head design as part of the U.S. Mint’s efforts to improve the nation’s smallest gold denomination. Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the Type 2 featured a taller, slimmer Liberty portrait and a new wreath reverse.

Although visually striking, the coin’s high-relief portrait made striking difficult, resulting in weak details and excessive wear in circulation. Because of this, the Type 2 series was short-lived, produced only from 1854 to 1856 before being replaced by the redesigned Type 3. Its limited mintage and brief lifespan make surviving examples—especially in Extra Fine condition—highly collectible pieces of U.S. numismatic history.
