The Longines Symphonette - Great American Triumphs Betsy Ross And The Flag 925 Silver Medal
This sterling silver medal is part of the 60 piece Longines Symphonette Great American Triumphs Medal set. It illustrates the late Betsy Ross, the Mother of the initial American Flag's stars and stripes which was given to General George Washington in 1776. The obverse depicts her seated in a rocking chair sewing the flag as three of the flag's creators watch; George Washington, Robert Morris and George Ross.
On the reverse the medal contains a peace of historic information that reads, “Betsy Ross – In June of 1776 the legendary mother of the stars and stripes gave her famous flag to George Washington at her home in colonial Philadelphia.” . Below the historic peace, an eagle is illustrated with an olive branch in its talons and its wings raised over its body.
In the 1940's a classical orchestra radio show named the Longines Symphonette was sponsored by the Longines Watch company. During the 1970's, the company used the radio show to cross promote different silver collections and their brand watch. Although the medals came from the Great American Triumphs Medal set, a series of 60 medals, the silver collection was actually produced by Wittnauer Precious Metals Guild. The medals were produced in 92.5% silver and 99.99% silver with an antique finish.
