The obverse features a design created by the renowned student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Adolph A. Weinman. Known as the “Walking Liberty”, this design first appeared on Silver Half Dollars in 1916. On the Type 2 Silver Eagle, elements of this iconic obverse design have been modified to more closely resemble the original illustration. Liberty walks forward with her right arm outstretched, holding branches in her left arm. The U.S. flag billows behind her with the sun rising in the background.
The reverse displays the brand-new reverse design by artist Emily Damstra. A bald eagle flies through the air while carrying an oak branch. It appears to be coming in for a landing with its wings outstretched.
