Japan, "Dragon" Yen, Year 29 (1896) Gin Countermark (1897), NGC VF Details, Chopmarked Silver Coin

The Japanese "Dragon" Yens are one of the most searched and collected coins. These coins came into mintage and circulation in 1870 for foreign and domestic use shortly after the Emperor Meiji restoration to the Japanese government. At this point a change in the currency occurred, from the old pre-decimal Ryo of the Tokugawa Shogunate to the new decimal currency of the Yen. Japan was under the silver standard, leading new coins to be mostly minted in silver.

This is a Japanese "One Yen" coin created during the ruler Mutsuhito in the year 29, also known as "1896". It is GIN Countermarked with the year "1897". The obverse artistry is of a dragon within a beaded circle with characters written above and the value written below "416  ONE YEN  .900"; separated by one bold bead between the sets of numbers and words. The numbers "416" stands for 416 grains of rice value (an old standard once used),  then the Japanese current value of the coin "ONE YEN", followed by the purity of the silver of .900 (90% silver). On the reverse, the value 1 Yen in Japanese characters are within a wreath with a chrysanthemum high above and a Countermark of the year 1897 on the right of the 1 Yen value characters.

Like all of our other coins, this one is guaranteed to be 100% authentic. Item will be wrapped and packaged safe for delivery.
