Richmond is the capital of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It was incorporated in 1742 and has been an independent city since 1871. William Byrd II, an English planter from the area, named the place Richmond after the English town of Richmond near London because the view of the James River was similar to the view of the River Thames in England when seen from the Richmond Hill.
