Sacramento is the capital of the State of California. Sacramento lies at the convergence of the Sacramento River and American River. John Augustus Sutter, a German-born Swiss citizen, established a colony for his fellow Swiss emigrants after obtaining a grant from the Mexican governor in 1839. He obtained a large piece of land for this colony and named it 'New Helvetia' meaning 'New Switzerland'. In 1848, when gold was discovered on Sutter’s property, it led to the California Gold Rush - more people started rushing to Sacramento and soon other businesses started developing.
