Detailed Information:

The $5 Gold Half Eagles are one of the first gold coins to be issued by the United States of America. After the authorization of Act of April 2, 1792, these coins were minted by the United States Mint since 1795-1929. During its 134-year journey, the Half Eagle saw various changes in its designs starting with the Turban Heads, Draped Bust, Classic Head, Liberty Head, and ending in Indian Head.

The Liberty Head was minted from 1839-1908. The coin was designed by Christian Gobrecht and shows a neoclassic influence in the design on the obverse which features a beautiful Lady Liberty whose hair are tied into a bun and held with beaded strings. Some of the curls are flowing out of the bun onto her neck. She is wearing a simple Coronet on her head with inscription “LIBERTY” on it. Since she is wearing the coronet, the coin is also known as Coronet Head. 13 stars encircle the main device and below the main device is the date of mintage.

On the reverse, the design features a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast and holding olive branches and arrows in its talons. The design is inspired from the Great Seal of United States.

When it comes to inscriptions on the reverse, the Liberty Head gets divided into two major groups, the first one is without motto which has only the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.” The second type is with motto which has an inscription of “IN GOD WE TRUST” on a banner above the eagle head along with the other inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.”

The without motto design was minted from (1839-1866), and the motto design was minted from (1866-1908).

Another important change in the Liberty Head which was not there in the previous designs of Half Eagles is the denomination. In the issues earlier to Liberty Head, the denominations were inscribed as “5 D.” In Liberty Head designs Christian Gobrecht changed the “5 D” to “FIVE D.”

Apart from these two changes, there were no other changes made to the Liberty Head for the 70 years that it was in circulation. The Liberty Head design was taken over by the Indian Head design in 1908, thereby putting an end to the Liberty Head design.

The tremendous historical significance, age, rarity, and the artistic appeal have made these one of the most sought after coins in the numismatic world, so go ahead and add these to your investment portfolio today.
