Built by the Maya people of the Terminal Classic period, Chichén Itzá is a complex of Mayan ruins of a large pre-Columbian city on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. Chichén Itzá was declared one of the Seven Wonders of the World on July 7th, 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal, which explains the number 070707 inscribed on the coin, just below the Casa de la Moneda mint. The Observatory in Chichen Itza, also known as El Caracol, is a round structure very similar to those that exist in other parts of Mesoamerica. Through windows at the top of the structure, the Mayans watched and studied the trajectory of Venus.
