The original San Fransisco Mint was opened in 1854, but the second, larger structure completed twenty years later is often top of mind when talking about the SF mint. Thanks to passionate volunteers, the Old Mint building was turned into a museum, instead of being demolished. In 1906 a severe earthquake occurred in San Francisco. Interestingly, the San Francisco Mint was the only government structure to survive the disaster. In 2006, which was the centennial of the earthquake, the San Francisco Old Mint commemorative coins were approved and struck.
The obverse features a detailed depiction of the Old Mint building.
The reverse showcases a bald eagle with its wings spread, holding arrows in its talons.
