The $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, minted between 1849 and 1907, was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver James Longacre. Containing .9675 troy ounces of gold and struck in .900 fine gold, this iconic coin was produced at the San Francisco Mint. It serves as a lasting reminder of the California Gold Rush, a pivotal period in American history. Before 1849, the U.S. Mint produced only $2.50, $5, and $10 gold coins. However, the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill and the massive influx of gold from the California Gold Rush led Congress to authorize the minting of the $20 Double Eagle Liberty gold coin. In January 1850, the U.S. Mint struck the first regular-production Liberty Double Eagles, marking the birth of one of the most famous gold coins in American numismatic history.
