Among many accomplishments of President Theodore Roosevelt, introducing coins that will go down in history as some of the most beautiful and innovative coins is one of the most important accomplishments. He had commissioned the famous sculptor and his dear friend August Saint-Gaudens with the responsibility of beautifying American coins.
U.S. coins with four different denominations (Double Eagle, Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle) were scheduled for a makeover. Saint Gaudens had only completed the first two before his untimely death in August 1907.
Another dear friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, a physician from Boston, Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow who was impressed by the Egyptian reliefs in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts had drawn inspiration from it to create a new concept in coin making. He had been working with a sculptor from Boston to develop a new sunken relief coin, which according to him could give a high relief design, was easily stackable, and also protect the design from wear and tear. When he wrote about it to the President, the president expressed interest in seeing a model.
Pratt made a design based on Saint-Gaudens’ Gold Eagle obverse design of Indian Head design which featured Lady Liberty wearing a headdress. The idea of Gold Eagle Indian Head coin was similar but Pratt used a male face of a Native American from his photo collection instead of a female face. He designed the detailed sunken relief of the male Native American wearing headdress which was liked by the President very much. Pratt suggested same design for both Quarter and Half Eagle denominations.
The reverse features a majestic bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows holding an olive branch inhis talons which shows America’s preparedness and desire for peace.
After the President’s approval, the coins were minted in 1908. But when the coins were released, it went through a lot of criticism for its new type of relief. People were unfamiliar with this new concept and many felt the design was not beautiful. Some felt the coins will not stack easily. A particular numismatist from Philadelphia, Samuel Chapman wrote a letter to President Theodore Roosevelt criticizing the coin’s beauty and especially the sunken relief, as he felt the sunken relief would in time accumulate dirt and harbor germs and cause health issues for the public. Theodore Roosevelt was however firm on his decision to continue issuing the coin which the current time has a high demand and is sought after by both collectors and investors.
The coins were minted from 1908-915 and then were paused for 10 years, then again its production began in 1925 and went on till 1929. This coin is one of the smallest series in the U.S. coinage history and has only 15 different date and mint combinations out of which 12 were issued from Philadelphia Mint and the other 3 issues were from Denver Mint.
In spite of going through all the initial criticism, the Quarter Eagle has earned itself a special place in the history of American coinage for its unique minting concept and detailed design with high artistic value. Because of their low availability, they are also in high demand at the current time.
