It became clear by 1990 to Congress and different lobbying organizations, that commemorative coins were an effective way to raise funds for private organizations. Being a simple alternative to government funding, this became the driving force behind several commemorative releases in 1991. This explains why this Korean War Silver Dollar, minted in 1991, commemorates the seemingly-random 38th anniversary of the end of the Korean War. The secretary of the Treasury consulted with the Korean War Veterans Memorial Advisory Board and the American Battle Monuments Commission while finalizing the coin’s imagery.
The obverse was designed and sculpted by John Mercanti, who was required to honor all branches of the military. Displayed: an army soldier climbing a hill, Air Force F-86 fighter planes overhead, Navy Ships roaming the water, and eight stars along the edge. Inscriptions are placed throughout.
The reverse features a map of the Korean Peninsula divided at the truce line. North Korea is shaded with diagonal lines and South Korea bears its national symbol in the center. Inscription and the head of an American eagle are also pictured.
