Detailed Information:
The gold 5-pound coin was first struck in 1820 for George III, only proof versions were struck and none were struck for circulation. The 5 pounds were again struck in 1826 for George IV, 1839 for Queen Victoria. The coins were for the first time struck for circulation along with proof versions in 1887 for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Again in 1893, to mark the change from Jubilee Head to Old Head, 5-pound gold coins were struck in both proof version and circulation version. In 1902, coronation issue of coins both in proof and circulation versions were issued. In 1911, for George V’s coronation, proof coin sets were issued. In 1937, a coronation issue proof coin set was released for George VI.
In 1953, proof sets containing denomination from the crown down to farthing was issued to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Again in 1957 proof coins were struck but none was released to the public, not even to the collectors. Hence these coins are extremely rare and fetch a large sum. The next strike was only in 1980, nine years after decimalization. Since 1980’s, the 5-pound gold coins have been struck although not consistently in most years to the present time.
The coins from 1980‐1984 use the effigy design of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Arnold Machin on the obverse.
The coins from 1985‐1990 use the effigy design of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Raphael Maklouf on the obverse.
The reverse has almost always been the iconic design by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci of St. George mounted on horseback slaying a dragon.
Since these coins have been minted in the limit, their unusually large size, their pure gold content, and their artistic designs, they are a much sought-after coin by collectors and investors alike.
