1903 S Morgan Silver Dollar $1 NGC MS 64+
This 1903 S Morgan Silver Dollar is an excellent choice for any kind of buyer. Morgan silver dollars are one of the most famous US silver coins that carry high collectible value and strike quality. These coins might be “common” but they are incredibly challenging to collect since their dates and mintmarks vary. These coins were minted at five different US Mint facilities including Philadelphia (no mintmark), New Orleans Mint (O), San Francisco Mint (S), Carson City Mint (C), and the Denver Mint (D), from 1878-1904 and once in 1921. This rare 1903 S Morgan Silver Dollar comes graded by NGC as Mint State 64+. This is a great condition for this kind of coin, which makes it a must-have item for your collection.
After the discovery of the Comstock Lode, silver flooded the market. The government then decided to take action and passed the Bland-Allison Act to purchase silver at market value and coin the raw silver into dollars. This led to the creation of Morgan Silver Dollars. There was a surplus of these coins, so the excess was stored in the Treasury’s vaults and released to the public starting in the 1960s. Because of their staggered release, these coins are difficult to find and collect them all. With such a rich history, these coins make a wonderful addition to your collection.
The obverse portrays Lady Liberty as designed by George T. Morgan in 1878. This coin shares its obverse with the 1877 silver half dollar. This side showcases an exclusive portrait of Lady Liberty wearing the "LIBERTY" tiara and her hair in a loose style. Morgan modeled her after a school teacher, Anna Williams, who posed for him to give Lady Liberty a special, more American look. Surrounding her head is 13 stars to symbolize the original colonies. Inscriptions include "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the year of mintage.
The reverse features an uncommon version of the eagle because Morgan studied eagles in real life to update the heraldic image. The eagle has its wings spread open, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the denomination. This heraldic eagle does not bear the traditional breastplate.
