1897 (M40) Japanese Dragon One Yen Silver Coin NGC XF Details

This coin is popular and fascinating both for the beauty of its design and for its historical value and is well worth collecting. This 1897 Japanese Dragon Yen is graded by NGC as XF Details.

In 1870, two years after the restoration of Emperor Meiji to the Japanese seat of power in Tokyo, the Imperial Japanese government began minting new coinage. This need for new coinage came as a result of  Japan’s shift from the old Ryo currency of the Tokugawa Shogunate to the new currency, the yen. At the time, Japan was on the silver standard, so the government’s new coinage was minted primarily in silver. Under these circumstances, the new Japanese silver yen was born.

The obverse on this coin depicts a dragon within a beaded circle and surrounding it are Japanese characters. Below the dragon are the fineness (.900) and denomination (1 Yen). The reverse depicts the value within the wreath and a chrysanthemum above. Throughout the coin, you will see chopped marks because  Chinese merchants and refiners punched indentations signifying that the coin was genuine.

Like all of our other silver coins, this one is guaranteed to be 100% authentic. Item will be wrapped and packaged safely for delivery.
