1883-CC Morgan Silver Dollar $1 NGC MS 65 GSA
The Carson City Morgan Silver Dollars give a tangible feel of the Wild West glory of America. Most of these CC Morgan Dollars that are available today were almost forgotten in the Treasury vaults and had not seen the daylight till the 1960's when it was found out that around three million of these coins still existed. These coins were later handed over to the Government Services Administration to market and sell them. These coins have a high demand in the numismatic world.

Morgan.

The Silver Morgan Dollars were minted from 1878 to 1904 and then for one last time in 1921. They were not minted out of necessity but rather under political pressure that was laid on the Treasury via the Bland-Allison Act which required the Treasury to purchase two to four million dollars worth of silver every month from the silver mine owners and mint them into coins.
These coins were minted in five different mints which are the Philadelphia Mint, the San Francisco Mint (S), the New Orleans Mint (O), the Carson City Mint (CC), and the Denver Mint (D). Only the coins minted at the Philadelphia Mint do not have a mintmark and only the coins minted at the Carson City have two lettered mint marks as “CC.”
Abe Curry was the founder of Carson City and the first superintendent of the mint when it opened. However, since Curry had a lot of business and political enemies, many preferred sending their mined silver to San Francisco despite how far, expensive, and risky the trip was rather than sending it to the nearby Carson City Mint to be minted under Abe Curry’s supervision.
This led to a low mintage of Carson City Morgan Dollars, which turned out to be a great thing from a collector's point of view today. In turn, this low mintage allowed Carson City Morgan Dollars to be stored in the Treasury for a long& time and somehow escaped the Pittman Act which required the melting of millions of Morgan Dollars. At least three million of these Carson City Morgan Dollars missed reaching the melting pot and today they are much sought after by collectors and investors alike. The designer of the coin is George T. Morgan, which is where the name of the coin comes from.
