1776 France Proof Gold Tribute Libertas Americana Medal
Designed by Benjamin Franklin in 1783, the Libertad Americana was sculpted by expert craftsmen Augutin Dupre, France’s fourteenth Engraver General of Currency. The Libertas American Medal is composed of 64 grams of .920 ounces of fine gold.
This exquisite medal was struck by the Paris Mint with a mintage of just 500 coins in commemoration of the original Libertas Americana medals struck in the 1780’s. The high relief finish was designed to mirror the original dies. The concept for the imagery was conceived by Benjamin Franklin, and altered by acclaimed engraver Augustin Dupre prior to its initial striking in 1783.
The obverse side of the medal features a left facing bust of Liberty with a physician’s hat on a pole in the background, and “LIBERTAS.MERICANA” inscribed across the top of the medal. Below the bust of Liberty is the inscription“4 JUIL.1776.”
The reverse side of the metal boasts the same design as the initial medals, a fable in which a baby said to represent America is guarded from Great Britain which is depicted as a ferocious lion by a female warrior – France. The reverse side also features the inscriptions “NON SINE DIIS ANIMOSUS INFANS” on the rime along with “17/19 OCT. 1777/1781” alluding to the triumphs at Yorktown and Saratoga.
This striking medal is an uncertified gem proof containing nearly 1.9 net ounces of gold, and is encapsulated with a white plastic ring which prevents viewing of the edge. Item comes with its original box from the Paris Mint and will be wrapped and packaged safe for delivery.
Like all of our other gold coins, Bullion Exchanges guarantees it to be 100% authentic.
