Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Head Gold Eagle debuted in 1838 and became one of the most widely circulated gold coins of its time. The obverse features Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed "LIBERTY," while the reverse displays a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch. In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added above the eagle, resulting in two distinct varieties: No Motto (1838-1866) and With Motto (1866-1907). This series played a crucial role in 19th-century commerce before being replaced by the Indian Head Gold Eagle in 1907.
