To accomplish his tenth labor, Hercules was required to travel to Erytheia in order to obtain the Cattle of Geryon. Geryon son of Chrysaor and Callirrhoe and grandson of Medusa had a distinguished lineage and was considered to be quite unique with one body and three heads.
Geryon lived on an island called Erythia, where he a kept a herd of red cattle guarded by Cerberus’s brother. Orthus, a two headed hounds, and the herdsman Eurytion. While on his journey Hercules crossed the Libyan Desert, and became so frustrated at the heat that he shot an arrow at Helios, the Sun. Helios in admiration of his courage gave Hercules the golden chariot he used to sail across the sea to reach Erythia.
When Hercules reached Erythia, he was confronted by the two headed dog, Orthus. With one powerful blow from his olive-wood club, Hercules killed the watchdog. Eurytion the herdsman came to assist Orthus, but Hercules dealt with him in the same way.
Upon hearing the commotion, Geryon sprang into action, carrying three shields, three spears, and wearing three helmets. He went after Hercules which led them to the River Anthemus where he fell victim to an arrow that had been dipped in the venomous blood of the Lernaean Hydra. Hercules forcefully shot the arrow which pierced Geryon’s helmet killing him.
Hercules then had to herd the cattle back to Eurystheus, which would prove to be a difficult journey. Some of the cattle were stolen, and others were bitten by gadfly (a fly that bites livestock) which were sent by Hera to irritate and disperse the cattle.
The hero was within a year able to retrieve them, Hera then sent a flood which raised the level of the river so much that Hercules could not cross with the cattle. He then piled stones into the river to make the water shallower. When he finally reached the court of Eurystheus, the cattle were sacrificed to Hera.
