Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and is the second-largest city in Southeastern USA. The corporate headquarters of Bank of America is housed in Charlotte. There are a few other reputed financial institutions in this city, making it the second-largest banking center in the USA. Charlotte is home to the headquarters of approximately 75% of all the NASCAR teams in the world and to nine Fortune 500 companies, for which it is considered a flourishing financial center. It is also known as the new energy capital as there are over 240 companies directly tied to the energy sector.
In 1768, Charlotte was officially incorporated and named Charlotte Town in honor of King George III’s wife, Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, which helped earn its nickname “The Queen’s City.” Another popular nickname is “Hornet’s Nest,” because when British General Charles Cornwallis marched his men through the city, they were driven out by hostile residents, prompting the general to write that Charlotte was a “hornet’s nest of rebellion". North Carolina had the first gold rush in American history, and Charlotte, with the Reed Gold Mine, was the first gold mine in the United States. Charlotte Mint, a branch of the United States Mint was established in Charlotte on March 3, 1835, and was specialized in gold coinage. All the gold coins produced here had a “C” mint mark. Over $5 million in gold coins were issued by this mint branch which is a museum now.
Although the mint is not functioning anymore, there is still no shortage of precious metal and coin dealers in this area. But remember that North Carolina does not have a tax exemption on sales of precious metals, bullion, coins, paper currency, and any other numismatic items. The current sales tax in North Carolina is 4.75% and is applied to any purchase of the above-mentioned items. However, the sales tax is always higher than 4.75% as there are local and county taxes added to it which differ from place to place. The total sales tax rate may be as high as 7.5%. Being an out-of-state retailer, Bullion Exchanges does not charge sales taxes on any purchases made by North Carolina residents. However, it is always better to check with a tax professional before making any purchase, as we are no tax policy experts.
