The Modern Commemorative Coin Program for United States Coins is one of the most extensive programs taken up by the U.S. Mint. It was first commenced in 1982 to celebrate the 250th birth anniversary of George Washington. This is a program that is authorized by the US Government and is released almost every year to honor famous American people, events, places, and institutions. US Mint produces $5 and $10 of .900 pure gold commemorative coins with changing designs on the obverse and reverse each year. Each design is more beautiful and distinctive than the last. Since these coins have limited mintage and are available for a short period of time, they are extremely popular among collectors as well as investors alike.
