Silver Peace Dollars NGC MS 61 (Random Year, 1921-1935)

The Silver Peace Dollars are the coins that were issued to memorialize the American victory in World War I and also signifies peace after World War I. The Peace Dollars were struck by the US Mint from 1921-1928 and then again from 1934-1935. These coins are a rather short-lived series and hence are much sought after by collectors as it is easier to complete these sets. The designer of the coin is Anthony de Francisci. These were the last coins made of silver that were actually struck for circulation in the United States of America.

Coin Features:

  • Made from .900 fine silver, with a weight of 0.7734 oz.
  • Graded by NGC as MS 61.
  • Produced by the U.S. Mint.
  • Year of mintage, 1921-1935, will vary based on inventory.
  • Designed by Anthony de Francisci.
  • Individual coins come in an NGC holder
  • Obverse: Features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a radiate crown with several loose strands of hair blowing in the wind, a design by Anthony de Francisci, modeled by Teresa de Francisci. Inscriptions – “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” Year of Mintage.
  • Reverse: A majestic bald eagle perched on a mountain top holding an olive branch in its talons on a background of sunrise. Inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “PEACE,” “ONE DOLLAR.”

A mark of American Victory in World War I and a symbol of peace, these Silver Peace Dollar Coins have a rich heritage. It is also the mark of initiation of new and fresh ideas, as these coins were the result of a thought to introduce a new coin to mark the American victory which was penned by Frank Duffield in The Numismatist magazine. He was the editor of this magazine in 1918.

Although a bill was not passed by the Congress to mint these coins, they could, however, be done at the discretion of the Secretary of Treasury under an act of 1890 according to which a new coin can be introduced if the old coin has been mined for more than 25 years. Hence the Morgan Dollars which had been mined for more than 25 years till they were replaced by the new Peace Dollar in December 1921 without the act of Congress.
