NATIONAL PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE DAY

HISTORY OF PEARL HARBOR

In 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service bombed the naval station at Pearl Harbor (Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii) and killed over 2400 US military personnel and civilians. Additionally, the Japanese Navy destroyed 188 aircraft and two Navy battleships. This attack happened without warning or a declaration of war. Within hours, Canada declared war on Japan, and the United States did so as well the very next day. Soon after, Germany declared war on the U.S. The attack on Pearl Harbor was an attempt by the Japanese to slow down the U.S. in the Pacific, but only escalated World War II. Furthermore, the U.S. responded to the Pearl Harbor attack with a surprise bombing of Tokyo with an atomic bomb. President Roosevelt said that Pearl Harbor would be “a date that will live in infamy.”

In 1991, Congress started the Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal for both military and civilians who were present at the attack. All military who were there that day will receive the medal. Meanwhile, civilians injured or killed from Pearl Harbor will receive one as well.

PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE DAY

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day became an official day in 1994 by an act of Congress. Although it is not a federal holiday, various people and organizations celebrate it. Survivors, visitors, and veterans come together to remember and honor the thousands killed that day. Many luncheons, school education events, survivors' stories in the media, wreath-laying ceremonies, memorial services, and other specialized services are held.

The American Flag should display on homes, military installations, and government buildings. The Flag should be flown half-mast until sunset to honor those fallen that day.
