Gold American Eagle Coins

American Eagle coins are among the world’s most popular gold bullion coins and silver bullion coins. First minted in 1986, a rich American heritage of iconic designs and high-quality minting is struck into every gold coin in this iconic series. The American Eagle coin series is produced in 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, and 1 oz sizes, and is legal tender backed by the U.S. Government. All are IRA eligible.

The gold eagle coin is one of the most popular bullion coins in our catalog. Its history begins in 1985, when the US Government sought to stimulate the domestic mining industry. This came to fruition later in the year in the Gold Bullion Coin Act, which authorized the gold American Eagle coin series for mintage under the condition that all gold used to make it would come from American sources. Ever since, its gorgeous, patriotic design and 1 oz of .9167 fine gold content have made it a staple for both collectors and investors alike.

The American Gold Eagle is currently the official gold bullion coin of the United States, though its design pays homage to coins that came before it. Specifically, its obverse is taken from sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ beloved Gold Double Eagle coin, which saw mintage immediately following the sculptor’s death in 1907 up until the New Deal halted its production in 1933.

Here, we see Lady Liberty walking proud and strong, using her right arm to hold her torch aloft while she stretches out her left arm to reveal a hand carrying olive branches. Her tall, imposing figure is walking toward the viewer, stepping over a cliff that overlooks the US Capitol building in the background. A stylized sunrise illuminates the whole scene.

The reverse, meanwhile, features an entirely original scene. Designed by sculptor Miley Frost (then Busiek), it is meant to honor the American family. It displays a male American bald eagle as he carries an olive branch back to his nest. His mate sits waiting for him, gathering their chicks under her impressive wingspan. Unlike most eagle depictions on American currency, the eagles on this coin are not alone, emphasizing the country’s sense of community.

The proof gold eagle debuted in 1986 with only one available size at 1 troy ounce. Later, in 1987, the US Mint released a ½ oz proof Gold American Eagle to accompany it. Since then, except for 2009, proof American gold eagles have been annually released in all four sizes available for Brilliant Uncirculated coins: 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, ½ oz, and 1 oz sizes.

Proof coins differ from brilliant uncirculated coins in that they are struck twice and specially treated to achieve a glossy appearance. This gives them a strong sense of contrast and sharp detailing, with frosted details and shiny, mirror-like backgrounds.

Bullion Exchanges also sells American Eagle gold coins and American Eagle silver coins with NGC and PCGS certifications. We offer both MS-69 and MS-70 grade coins. MS-69 is a coin of near perfect condition, while MS-70 is a coin of perfect condition. Additionally, we carry graded coins with First Strike, First Day of Issue, and Early Releases options. First Strike and Early Releases mean that the coin is guaranteed to have been shipped from the mint within the first 30 days of release. First Day of Issue coins take this a step further and were shipped out on the first day of the coin’s release.
