The Perth Mint might be best known for its Kookaburra series; however, this new coin might have the familiar Kookaburra, but it is only a part of the Next Generation coin series. The new 2020 coin for the Next Generation collection has a Kookaburra also featured for their 3rd edition release. This lovely silver coin is struck from .9999 pure silver in 2 troy oz and 10 troy oz variations. Additionally, these coins carry a special micro-engraved security feature and are produced in the piedfort style.

WHAT IS THE PERTH MINT NEXT GENERATIONS SERIES?

The Next Generation coin series began in 2018 by the Perth Mint, and it features mother animals with their offspring. The first release featured a mother koala and her baby on the reverse. The second release also had a mother and baby, but 2019 showcased a mother and baby crocodile. This year, the coin features a Kookaburra mother and her baby chick.

This series is minted in a special style called the piedfort style. Basically, this calls for minting coins with a thicker width, but a smaller diameter. For example, the 2 oz coin actually matches the diameter of a 1 oz coin, but is thicker to weigh 2 oz. The word piedfort is derived from French, and it translates to “heavy weight.” Specifically, piedfort coins date back to the twelfth century in France as it was a common design for medieval coins. These 2 and 10 oz silver coins offer an ideal way to aggregate a more prominent measure of silver in a single purchase.

WHAT IS A KOOKABURRA?

In case you aren’t familiar with this bird, the kookaburra is a kingfisher bird of prey recorded in Australia as early as the 18th Century. After finding this wonderful kingfisher, Australia selected this bird as a symbol for the country. Also, the kookaburra represented Australia during the 2008 Olympics and continues to be the mascot for the Australian Men’s Hockey Team.

The call of the ‘Laughing Kookaburra,’ is most recognizable for its distinctiveness. The sound this bird makes is often a sound effect for films and television. Funnily enough, it is not a sound you would expect from a bird because it sounds like a harsh, cackling laugh. People often mistake this bird’s call for a monkey’s babble. You can hear this well-known call in films such as Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. You can also hear this sound effect in amusement parks with jungle-themed rides to capitalize on the jungle experience.

WHAT IS THE DESIGN OF THE 2020 PERTH MINT NEXT GENERATION COIN?

Natasha Muhl illustrated the reverse of the 2020 Silver Australian Piedfort Kookaburra Perth Mint .9999 Fine BU. On this side you will find a mother and baby kookaburra nestling atop a tree branch. The baby has an open mouth, as though it is waiting impatiently for food. Additionally, this coin has a security feature not visible to the naked eye. That is, unless you use a magnifying glass, you will not be able to see the micro-engraved P mintmark that ensures the validity of the coins.

This coin also spotlights the Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. This portrait is of the Queen’s right-facing profile. Specifically, she wears the George IV State Diadem Crown and royal earrings and jewels. Her portrait also goes down to her shoulders.
