Check Out These Cheeky Chibi Coins!
Chibi, a Japanese slang word, usually describes something short, chubby, and cute. This unique art form found its way into anime though its popular use in manga comics and graphic novels. The Batman Chibi Coin and Harry Potter Chibi Coin mark the first two coins in an exciting series from the New Zealand Mint. The next coins in the series also follow the DC and Harry Potter themes, and more. Keep an eye out for more characters, coming soon!
Here Comes Harry!
Perhaps one of the most famous book and movie franchises on the planet, Harry Potter continues to delight fans, also known as “Potterheads”, across the globe. The story of the young boy wizard who grows up to defeat the evil villain Voldemort, with the help of his friends Ron and Hermione, inspires audiences across multiple generations. Add a bit of magic to your coin collection with this “Gryffindor-able” Harry Potter coin!
Bring Out the Batman!
He is vengeance, he is the night, he is…Batman! First appearing in 1939 in DC comics, Batman (also known as the wealthy playboy and philanthropist Bruce Wayne), notably fights crime without the use of any superpowers. Instead, he uses his genius intellect, superior martial arts skills, and assistance from his trusty sidekick, Robin, and steadfast butler, Alfred, to take down Gotham’s most wanted. Batman’s most famous adversary, the Joker, arguably remains his most challenging (and most compelling) foe to this day. Don’t wait—bring home the hero Gotham deserves today!
The obverse of both coins features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II with her royal diadem. The inscriptions display the Queen’s name, along with the legal tender country, year, face value, weight, purity, and copyright information for the character.
The reverse of the Harry Potter coin displays a colorized Harry Potter in the Japanese chibi-style. An enlarged head and small body representative of the Chibi form give Harry an adorable childlike appearance. His hair, slightly brushed aside, artfully reveals his prominent lightning bolt scar. Additionally, Harry wears his Gryffindor scarf and cloak, showing off his House Pride.
The reverse of the Batman coin also depicts the caped crusader as a cute chibi character, wearing his classic grey and black Batsuit. He wears his recognizable yellow utility belt as his iconic black cape seemingly billows behind him.
