A three-year program entitled “Preamble to the Declaration of Independence Platinum Proof Coin Series” was announced yesterday. The Declaration of Independence inspires this series. This series will begin in 2018. It will feature one-ounce proof coins of 99.95% platinum with new and updated designs.
Proof coins go through a specialized minting process. First, burnished coin blanks fit into presses with special dies. The coin goes through multiple strikes. This achieves a floating image effect over a mirrored field. Second, inspectors scrutinize the quality of each coin. Third, they place them in a protective plastic capsule and mount them in a satin-lined velvet case. Finally, these coins will come along with an official Certificate of Authenticity. They sell at a fixed price. The $100 face value of the American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin sets it apart as the highest denomination of any US legal tender coin.
The US Mint has also made available uncirculated versions of the gold and silver American Eagles for collectors. These coins feature the same designs as the proof versions. Mint marks distinguish uncirculated coins. The location of mint shows on the mint marks. They undergo minting in burnished coin blanks. Then they are fed one by one by hand into specially adapted presses. These coins are also carefully inspected before they are put into a protective plastic and then within a box. A Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each of these coins.
The American Eagle One Ounce Platinum Proof Coin went to release in 1997. It features the same obverse, a Liberty portrait. The reverse has cycled through different themes. These themes include “Vistas of Liberty,” “Foundations of Democracy,” “The Preamble to the Constitution,” and “Torches of Liberty.”
The third decade of this program will see updated obverse designs. Concurrently a design by the same person, Justin Kunz, along with a new shared reverse design. This series reflects the foundation of American principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is as listed in the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence.
The 2018 release carries the Life theme. It showcases Lady Liberty planting seeds in a field alongside a child. She carries a sword to symbolize the defense of life. The field around her signifies the labor and thought necessary to sustain life. The tree and stream in the background portray nature; and the importance of being a good steward of the environment around us. “LIFE,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “LIBERTY” inscribes on the obverse of this coin. The year of mintage also showcases on the obverse.
The 2019 release celebrates Liberty. It features Lady Liberty standing tall over prairies, lakes, and mountains. The rough terrain in the background calls on the American spirit of exploration. It also calls on the freedom to search for new places, ideas, and ways of life. Lady Liberty’s lips part. This symbolizes freedom of speech. The torch she carries acts as a guiding light. She also holds a book to show the need for law and equality. The obverse will show “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “2019”.
The 2020 release commemorates the third and final American principle, the Pursuit of Happiness. This coin shows Lady Liberty at work. She is harvesting a rich bounty with a girl at her side. Her bounty symbolizes that which liberty makes possible. The buildings are standing behind her express the American path. The final step of the story shows throughout the series. You’ll see the furrowed field to mountains to home and farm. The representative of the hard work and ingenuity needed for success, this third coin wraps up the series. The obverse will carry the inscriptions “HAPPINESS,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “LIBERTY”, and the year of mintage.
All will share a reverse design of an eagle soaring with an olive branch gripped in its talons. This was a craft by AIP Designer Patricia Lucas-Morris. They will all compose of 99.95% platinum and will carry the “W” mintmark.
