History of Father’s Day
In 1908, the first unofficial celebration of Father’s Day took place. This event was meant as a one-time celebration. However. On July 5th, 1908 in West Virginia, a church held an event to honor the fathers and other men in a Sunday sermon. This special sermon was dedicated to the men who passed away in a tragic explosion at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in December.
After that, the nation began to push for an annual Father’s Day in 1910. Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington State was one of six children raised by her widower father. Because Mother’s Day was already established, Dodd pushed for the Father’s Day equivalent to honor male caregivers. Dodd had incredible support through churches, the YMCA, retailers, and government officials. Because of her activism and passion, Washington State celebrated the first statewide Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. As a result, the holiday gained traction throughout the country. Father’s Day officially became a national holiday in 1972.
However, in the 1920s and 1930s, there was a movement to scrap Mother’s and Father’s Day. Many preferred a single Parent’s Day to honor any and all caregivers together. The Great Depression, however, got in the way of this movement. The holiday became widely commercialized by businesses as a second ‘Christmas’ for men to alleviate the Great Depression. But, this holiday gained its support by the majority of the country during WWII. Celebrating Father’s Day became a way to support the war effort and honor soldiers. Consequently, Father’s Day became a regular US holiday by the end of the war. In 1972, former President Richard Nixon signed the proclamation to make it official.
Today, Father’s Day is an international holiday that may have variations, but its purpose mostly remains the same.
