What are the American Eagle Bullion Coins?

Coins, especially the American Eagle coin, are a cost-effective way of adding a small increment of value to your investment portfolio. Also, coins offer a liquid two-way market. The American Eagle Coins Program has catered to this style of investing since 1986. This line began with the American Gold and Silver Eagle coins. Then, in 1997, Platinum Eagles were released to the public. Finally, in 2017, the US Mint strikes palladium bullion coins. This is the official bullion coin series of the United States.

History of the US Mint

It was 1792 when the US Mint began. This makes this branch among the oldest agencies in the US. The US Mint is the only producer of legal tender in the United States. They manufacture Congressional Gold Medals and coin-related products on top of their bullion coins. Bullion coins from the US Mint come in proof, uncirculated/burnished, and commemorative editions.

The US American Eagle Coins Program has been around since 1986. This is the first line of bullion products from the US Mint since FDR outlawed the practice of collecting bullion products in 1933. He did this in response to the Great Depression, claiming that hoarding gold stalled economic growth crucial at that time in the US. Today, precious metals investing has become a more accepted and stable method of investing encouraged by the government.

In 1986, the San Francisco Mint was the first to strike the American Silver Eagle coin. Now, the three mint facilities that produce the American Eagle Coins are in Philadelphia, West Point, and San Francisco.

What is the symbolism of the American Eagle?

The Bald Eagle has been the chosen icon to represent America since 1782. It was illustrated on the Great National Seal of the United States and appears on many government institutions and documents. Former President JFK once said:

The Founding Fathers made an appropriate choice when they selected the bald eagle as the emblem of the nation. The fierce beauty and proud independence of this great bird aptly symbolizes the strength and freedom of America…

The bald eagle is indigenous to America. It represents strength, determination, and independence in its bold, majestic form. The US Mint capitalized this image on the American Eagle Coins Program for all its coins’ reverses from 1986 until 2020.

Two Sides to Every Coin

Since its inception in 1986, the Silver American Eagle coins have featured the American Eagle on the reverse’s display.  The design for this was originally from 1792, and it was updated for the 1986 release. This design includes the heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, designed by John Mercanti. The Amerian Eagle clutches an inscribed ribbon in its beak, an olive branch in its right talon, and arrows in its left talon. Its chest bears the shield that represents America indivisibly to mandate we rely on our virtue. Above its head is thirteen stars that signify the original colonies. Since 1792 this has been on coinage. This also represents the Great Seal of the US that proclaims strength through peace.

This, however, will not be the reverse of this coin for gold and silver only starting in 2021. There is currently no redesign in place for the platinum and palladium coins.

The reverse will remain the same design by Adolph A Weinman. His “Walking Liberty” illustration drew inspiration from the silver half-dollar from 1916-1947. Lady Liberty walks towards the setting sun with oak and laurel branches in her left arm, outstretching her right arm to the horizon. Her skirt and the American flag ripple around her body.

As of June 2020, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) released information on the new sample designs for the Gold and Silver American Eagles coins. As of this writing, there are 39 candidates for the new reverse. Every design will feature an eagle, but each design portrays a different action and form of the iconic American symbol. This will first be seen on the bullion releases for 2021. Later, the anti-counterfeiting features and new design will appear on the Proof and other versions in the series.
