There can be no mistake when determining the 2021 Kangaroo coin’s country of origin with the distinctly Australian marsupial featured on the reverse. Add Australia’s fantastic wildlife to your collection before the energetic kangaroos bounce away!

When Did the Australian Kangaroo Coins Start?

Although the Kangaroo coins are a common staple for coin collections today, the 2021 Kangaroo coins were actually once the Australian Gold Nugget coin program. Beginning in 1987, the Australian Gold Nugget coins were made to capitalize on the Australian history of gold mining in the country. The British Royal Mint actually began the Perth Mint due to Australia’s rich supply of gold. Therefore, this modern gold coin program was supposed to pay homage to Australia’s richness. The Gold Nugget coins, therefore, featured an image of a gold nugget with the kangaroo. Additionally, these coins had a “two-tone” frosted appearance with hard plastic encapsulation for each. These special features were quite unusual for a bullion coin program, but this is what helped give the Gold Nugget coins a unique market niche.

However, in 1989, the gold coins instead began to spotlight the red kangaroo. This design was changed in order to have a more universal representation of Australia. Usually, the first thing to come to anyone’s mind when they think of Australia is the kangaroo. So alongside the Australian Kookaburra coins and Koala coins, you can also add more of Australia’s unique creatures to your portfolio with the Kangaroo coins.
